the learning & work team

Groundwork’s Learning and Work Team is an innovative team that aims to promote economic inclusion by creating opportunities to move individuals into training and employment. We offer unemployed people the opportunity to take part in a programme aimed at increasing their skills base, whilst giving them a real work experience.

We employ people who have been referred to us through agencies such as Jobcentre Plus, Connexions, the Probation Service and other support agencies, as trainees for a period of 13 weeks.

The terms and conditions of the programme are flexible, to meet the needs of our client group. Those who are eligible are interviewed to assess both their suitability to join the programme and their personal needs. Each trainee has an individual training programme which is designed to suit their needs and work ambitions. Added benefits of the programme include vocational training, support with basic skills and job search activities.

Our 5 objectives are to:

  1. Provide quality training, to enable people to realise their full potential.
  2. Enable trainees to develop the necessary skills to locate relevant job opportunities.
  3. Support trainees to develop basic literary and numeracy skills in order to facilitate work related tasks.
  4. Offer opportunities for trainees to gain appropriate qualifications.
  5. Facilitate opportunities to work as part of a team, giving the chance for interaction with other individuals; help to develop confidence, communication skills and team working, and the social skills necessary to enter the workplace.

We work on a range of construction/landscaping projects that help to improve local community spaces, canal towpaths and public open spaces, including constructing play areas, designing and planting sensory gardens, and erecting pergolas, tables and benches. Trainees also carry out fencing works, slabbing, tarmacking, block paving and maintenance on local nature reserves, which also includes training in traditional crafts such as coppicing, meadow management and installing footpaths.

Working on an extensive range of projects opens the trainees up to working with a vast array of people; from members of the community, to contractors and professionals from the fields of design and construction. By the end of their contract, trainees will have achieved relevant qualifications, developed their life skills and have the confidence to apply for more inspiring jobs, better suited to their ambitions.
