Groundwork in Derby & Derbyshire is unique in having an entire department dedicated to producing digital media; the Imagination Lab.

The Imagination Lab is the only digital creative media studio in Derbyshire dedicated to working with and supporting the local community and economy. We are dedicated to an ethos of community involvement and client ownership. Our projects are as varied as the people we work with and range from helping community groups with the local heritage projects; to empowering young people at risk of exclusion; to creating high-quality commercial productions.

We also work extensively with local authorities, using digital media to help them improve their services and deliver on Local Area Agreement targets.

We can boast a standard of equipment and level of expertise to match any commercial production house. Added to this, we bring a commitment to community regeneration and a wealth of experience that you simply will not find elsewhere. If you can imagine it, then we can create it!

The Imagination Lab offers a variety of products and services:

Film Production: much of our digital media work is dedicated to helping groups and organisations to get their message across, via the medium of film. As an integral part of the production process, groups and individuals will often receive media training themselves. This means that they can take an active role in the production of their own films; giving them ‘ownership’ of their projects.

Since we started producing films, we have worked in such diverse areas as comedy, drama and documentary, as well as producing a wide range of training and promotional videos. We also use film and video to bring added value to other projects; as a self-assessment tool, or as a dynamic way to gather information in community consultations, for example.

Sound Recording: whether it is a film soundtrack, a local band, or the spoken word, our custom-built studio is capable of producing top quality recordings from any source. Many of our staff are experienced musicians and we are capable of creating original soundtracks on site. We also use this facility to provide voice-overs and original scores for film productions.

Digital Media & ICT Training: our in-house UKonline Centre offers a wide range of vocational and non-vocational courses. As well as this, we specialise in providing training in creative media disciplines such as vector and bitmap graphics, web design, animation and DVCam. We also design many bespoke courses, tailored to our customer’s needs.
