WILD about natureAn ambitious project to recreate a rare habitat is starting to be realised at Belper Parks Local Nature Reserve in Belper. Lowland meadow which is home to lots of different flowers, grasses and wildlife has declined by over 95% over the last 50 years but a three year land fill tax funded project is aiming to stop the rot. ‘Wild about Nature' is a SITA Trust funded project through the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme between Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire and Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. It is working on 14 sites across the area to restore or recreate species rich grasslands which have all but disappeared. Full story WOODLAND DISCOVERY DAYPupils from Waingroves Junior School spent a day in Waingroves Wood as part of their ‘One World Week' studies. Through the week the pupils did a range of activities to explore their awareness of the environment both local and further afield and the issues affecting them. From Reception class to Year 5, pupils did a variety of activities looking at the value of trees and their importance in our lives. The younger pupils got close to the different trees in wood, making bark rubbings, looking at leaf shapes and making collages from natural materials. Older pupils got out their calculators to work out how old and how tall the trees were in the wood. The activities were provided by Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire through their Community Wildspaces project. Tim Brooks of Groundwork said, “It was really encouraging to see almost the whole school come out and visit their local woodland and explore and get to know it better. These children will have the future of our environment in their hands so it's vital to fire their imagination and interest.” CommUNity spacesCommunity Spaces is a £50 million grants programme managed by Groundwork UK on behalf of the Big Lottery Fund.
