PROJECT SPOTLIGHT:

ECCLESBOURNE VALLEY RAILWAY

This was a 3 year project to produce a whole range of interpretation and visitor experiences for the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway.

Sited in Wirksworth and running from the old Wirksworth Railway Station, the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway is run by a - very - dedicated group of volunteers, who are working towards the restoration of this old railway line, which runs along the picturesque Ecclesbourne Valley from Wirksworth to Duffield.

The project was carried out in 2 phases: the first phase saw the production of a leaflet; a series of interpretation panels running northwards from the station to Ravenstor and the production of an audio exhibit rigged to an infrared sensor, which activated when a visitor approached.

The second phase of the project saw the production of a much larger leaflet, incorporating a Wirksworth Town Trail; more panels, this time running southwards to Duffield and the production of a DVD, which comprised 3 individual films, including a history of the railway line, a Wirksworth Town Trail and a history of the area's quarries.

The project incorporated a high level of involvement from the volunteers who work for the railway and members of the public from in and around Wirksworth.

Many volunteered to act as extras in the historic scenes in the film and a number of people were interviewed for their reminiscences of Wirksworth past. The voice over for the film was generously provided by Derbyshire resident and hollywood actor David Sterne.
