| What is it? An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a structured framework, which assists an organisation to manage and reduce its environmental impacts. The requirements of an EMS are set out in the framework specified in national or international environmental standards. You can run your own ‘in-house' EMS or choose to get it externally certified, which would give significantly more weight in the eyes of customers and suppliers. Currently, an organisation can decide to go for one of the following four recognised environmental standards: |

What will you get out of it?
a) Legal compliance:
An EMS helps ensure your organisation is aware of and compliant with the relevant environmental legislation, avoiding enforcement action and/or prosecution from the Environment Agency.
This will also assist you in getting prepared for new-coming legislation, including possible regulations on carbon footprint.
| By implementing an EMS, your company will be looking more closely at improving its resource efficiency (energy, water, raw materials, etc) and waste management, hence providing opportunities for cost savings and improved profitability. It may also help reduce insurance premiums. It is nowadays recognised that insurers are more willing to insure businesses with good environmental records and low risks |

c) Efficiency gains
The maintenance of your EMS will involve examining how you carry out your operations and investigating the most effective (and least wasteful) way to undertake them.
